Nutrisystem Vs Jenny Craig - A Comparison of the Similarities and Differences

I find that many people confuse Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig. Although both are popular prepackaged meal replacement diets, there are a few key differences between the two. I will discuss these (as well as some similarities) in this article.

The Similarities:

Prepackaged Convenience: Both of the diet plans are meal replacement systems in which you eat a wide variety of prepackaged foods. This makes both plans very convenient in that your meals are mostly prepared for you, with only basic assembly required. There's also no calorie counting or point totaling. As long as you eat the foods provided and your healthy additions are in line with what the plan directs, you are "safe" in terms of fat, calories and carbohydrates.

Low Calorie / High Protein Foods: Both diets work by having dieters consume low calorie, low carb, high protein foods that bump up fat and weight loss. Both indicate that their members lose approximately 2 plus pounds per week.

Taste: I've tasted the food on both diets and for the most part both are very edible and have come a long way in terms of taste and variety. Both are much better than I expected. There are lots of choices available, with snack, carb, and dessert like options like pizza, chips, burgers, cake, cookies, muffins, etc. As taste and preferences vary, not every one will like every choice, but there are so many choices from which to choose that most every one can find something.

The Differences:

Support / Counseling: One major difference in the two plans is the level of one on one support. Both plans offer weight loss counseling. But with Jenny Craig, your counselor is assigned. There are clinics throughout the country and you are encouraged to meet your counselor face to face once per week. You'll also most likely pick up your food there. If you sign up for Jenny online, you can communicate via telephone.

Nutrisystem's support is mostly online or via telephone. Basically, you log onto your account, hit the counseling tab, and can connect online in real time to get the help you need. If you prefer, you can also meet up with a counselor or dietician via telephone. Your meals are shipped to your door rather than having the option of picking them up at a clinic.

Celebrity Endorsements: Both diets are endorsed by celebrities. Currently, Jenny Craig is promoted by Valerie Bertinelli and Queen Latifa. (Kirstie Alley used to promote it, but has since left the company.) Jillian Barberie and Marie Osmond are currently signed on with Nutrisystem. Danielle Fishel (from Boy meets World) and Tori Spelling used to promote it, but when Tori became pregnant for the second time, she signed off. This may just be me, but between the two, Nutrisystem seems more provocative with their advertising, parading Jillian Barberie around in a bikini to show off her results. Yes, Kirstie Alley did take a bathing suit walk on Oprah, but it was not nearly as revealing.

Costs: With both plans, you are required to pay for the foods. The costs of meals for both plans are around $10 per day (which is not bad considering the cost of groceries and gas today). Jenny Craig does charge additional membership fees, but there are usually specials. A current example is "$35 for 6 weeks," or "lose twenty pounds for $20." Since Nutrisystem is only charging for the food, it is a bit cheaper.

Which Is Better?: Which diet works best for you is going to depend a lot of your preferences. If you really want the one on one, face to face support, you may prefer Jenny Craig. If you find this more of an inconvenience and would prefer to only have to pay for the food, Nutrisystem may work better.

Both plans can be very effective and both have a high level of customer satisfaction, so you really can't go wrong with either if you're considering a prepackaged meal replacement diet.
